Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament
Location: Costa Mesa Verde Country Club; Costa Mesa, CA
Date: May 21, 2007
In May 2007, Broadcom was a proud Gold Sponsor of the annual 'We Care' Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament. Hosted by the Tax & Financial Group, the golf tournament and invited guests participated
in an evening celebration that featured both silent and live auctions, with proceeds that were given to benefit children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Part of the live auction was hosted by an 11-year-old boy named Gannan, who, at the age of nine, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a
rare blood disease that required a bone marrow transplant.
Gannan was fortunate. His 5-year-old sister, Amanda, was a perfect and brave candidate for a transplant, donating her marrow in a dangerous and painful procedure to save her brother's life.
After Gannan and Amanda recuperated from surgery, he was granted a wish to travel on a Disney Cruise to the Disney Private Island. The trip was even more special to Gannan because, as he pointed
out, 'there are 7 people in my family, so it's hard to take big vacations!' Since then, he has had a full recovery.
To date, 150,293 wishes have been granted throughout the United States by Make-A-Wish. As the key corporate sponsor of the golf tournament, Broadcom was able
to contribute to the efforts of the foundation to "share the power of a wish" by providing "hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions." With the help of
Broadcom's donation, Dick McCloskey, CEO of the Tax & Financial Group, predicts that the money raised at the benefit could support between 25 and 30 wishes similar to Gannan's. As Mr.
McCloskey noted, "To bring a day of joy and hope to just one seriously ill child is very noble. To contribute to the joys and hopes of hundreds of these children is a gift.".
