Broadcom Donates a Data Center ... or Two

Equipment Donation Extends the Life of Broadcom Data Center Equipment.

Broadcom is taking its recycling initiative to new heights by donating a variety of used data center equipment to a worthy cause. In February and March 2009, Broadcom donated more than a half million dollars worth of servers and network appliances to universities in both the Southern and Northern California areas.

The University of California at Irvine (UC Irvine) and the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley) received the donated equipment and plan to deploy it in their own networks. Both universities will use the equipment to support teaching, research, and public service missions.

This type of donation is a win-win situation for both Broadcom and the universities. For Broadcom, the donation provides an environmentally-friendly way to redeploy equipment that has outlived its usefulness to Broadcom. For the universities, the donation provides access to relatively modern equipment that will improve educational and IT capabilities, which in turn, provides an enhanced learning environment for students.

Broadcom plans to donate more used equipment to charitable causes in the future.
