BCM3348 Chip Supports Both A-TDMA and S-CDMA Modes of DOCSIS 2.0
Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, today announced that two cable modem products received CableLabs® DOCSIS™ 1.0 Certification using the new Broadcom® BCM3348 DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 2.0-capable cable modem chip.Broadcom's advanced and cost-effective BCM3348, introduced today, allows manufacturers to deliver DOCSIS 1.0-certified cable modems that are capable of being software upgraded to DOCSIS 2.0 operation, supporting both A-TDMA (advanced time division multiple access) and S-CDMA (synchronous code division multiple access) modes. DOCSIS stands for Data over Cable Service Interface Specification.
The DOCSIS 2.0 specification allows for the tripling of upstream data capacity, from the consumer to the cable operator, creating a DOCSIS cable network that operates at up to 30 Megabits per second (Mbps). This tripling of speed enables cable modem service providers to expand their broadband service offerings to both businesses and consumers to include higher speed and symmetric data service tiers, multi-line cable telephony, videoconferencing, streaming IP video and remote learning applications.
In addition to these DOCSIS 2.0 capabilities, the BCM3348 provides fifty percent greater packet performance than prior generation DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS cable modem solutions, enabling advanced integrated DOCSIS 2.0 products such as wireless CableHome™ residential gateways and PacketCable™ Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) cable modems.
"Broadcom's announcement of the BCM3348 is a significant milestone for the cable industry," said Dr. Rich Prodan, Broadcom's Vice President and Chief Scientist, Broadband Communications. "This chip enables a rapid transition to DOCSIS 2.0-capable products, which will in turn enable cable operators to deliver and support more broadband services to more subscribers. DOCSIS 2.0 products will also allow them to roll out advanced high revenue services that require more bandwidth. These applications are expected to surpass basic cable service by the year 2005."
The BCM3348 incorporates the same features as Broadcom's widely deployed DOCSIS 1.0 and DOCSIS 1.1 cable modem chips, and includes A-TDMA and S-CDMA, the two advanced communication technologies required by the DOCSIS 2.0 specification. This complete DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 capability allows manufacturers to build cable modems, residential gateways and VoIP modems that work with today's DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 cable equipment, and that have the capability to support DOCSIS 2.0 upgrades. Moreover, by leveraging Broadcom's existing cable modem architecture, which is the most widely used solution today, the BCM3348 allows manufacturers to reduce their time to market for DOCSIS 2.0 products.
"Broadcom's BCM3348 is the most advanced, highest performance and most integrated DOCSIS 2.0-based solution available in the industry," said Tim Lindenfelser, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Business Unit. "To date, the BCM3348 has won over 10 major cable modem design wins, from six of the top seven cable modem suppliers in the world. The worldwide acceptance of the BCM3348 is a clear indication that there will be a rapid transition to DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 2.0 modems beginning in the fourth quarter of 2002."
The BCM3348 is built upon Broadcom's five prior generations of DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS products, and more than 30 million cable modem silicon solutions shipped throughout the world. The BCM3348 combines a DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0-based Media Access Controller (MAC) with A-TDMA and S-CDMA advanced physical layer technology, including on-chip analog-to-digital converters, power amplifiers, and voltage regulators, to create a highly- integrated, single-chip DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0-capable silicon solution. The BCM3348 also directly supports the unique and compelling Broadcom Propane™ network capacity enhancement technology that provides up to three times the upstream capacity offered by competitive DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS silicon solutions.
Reference Designs and Software
To enable OEM customers to quickly develop DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 2.0-capable cable modem, residential gateway and VoIP products, the BCM3348 chip and software are available on three separate reference designs:
1) The BCM93348, a standard DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 2.0-capable cable modem
reference design with 10/100 Ethernet and USB 1.1 interfaces.
2) The BCM93348RG, a CableHome DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 2.0-capable IEEE 802.11
wireless residential gateway with 4 ports of 10/100 Ethernet and 32
Mbps HomePNA™ 2.0 interfaces, plus CableMedea™ CableHome
software.
3) The BCM93348VCM, a PacketCable DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 2.0-capable 2-Line
POTS VoIP cable modem with 10/100 Ethernet and USB 1.1 interfaces,
plus CablexChange™ PacketCable software.
The BCM3348 is available now in both commercial and industrial operating
temperature versions in a 352-pin PBGA package. The BCM3348 is offered at $35
each in volume quantities.
