Broadcom Demonstrates Bluetooth® Technology Leadership With the Industry's Broadest Product Line Qualified for the Latest Version 1.2 Standard Specification

Bluetooth SIG Grants BQB Qualification to Broadcom's Single-Chip Bluetooth

Solutions Designed Specifically for Wireless Mouse and Keyboard, CDMA Mobile

Phone, GSM Mobile Phone, PDA and PC Host Side Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., Bluetooth Americas, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a leading provider of silicon solutions enabling broadband communications, today announced Bluetooth® version 1.2 qualification of its single-chip Bluetooth transceivers by the BQB (Bluetooth Qualification Board). Qualification of the Broadcom® chips for the recently ratified version 1.2 of the core Bluetooth specification will accelerate the qualification time for customers' products. The inclusion of the version 1.2 standard feature set will also enable end products based on Broadcom's Blutonium® product family to offer better overall system performance, lower interference with nearby wireless LANs and lower power consumption.

The family of Broadcom chips comprises the broadest line of radios and transceivers to be qualified by the BQB, the body overseeing compatibility among Bluetooth devices. Version 1.2 of the Bluetooth specification was just formally ratified in November 2003, introducing new features such as improved user interface functionality and advanced radio techniques to mitigate radio interference from the many other devices that transmit in the 2.4 GHz radio frequency band. Bluetooth version 1.2 devices are backwards compatible with those based on previous generations of the specification. The BCM2004, BCM2035 and BCM2040 transceivers are all available now with version 1.2 functionality.

"The new features introduced in Bluetooth 1.2 will make the technology easier to use, more resistant to radio interference from other devices and more secure," said Scott Bibaud, Director of Bluetooth Marketing at Broadcom. "BQB qualification of our broad range of application-specific Bluetooth solutions helps our customers get to market quickly with the most advanced standard features available."

The qualification means that equipment manufacturers developing Bluetooth-enabled electronic devices such as mobile phones, mouse and keyboard applications, and desktop and portable PCs will be able to take advantage of the advanced features introduced in the version 1.2 specification without fear of Bluetooth interoperability problems. Designed to optimize performance and minimize time to market for specific device applications, Broadcom's BQB-qualified chips allow equipment manufacturers to select the solution that facilitates timely development and qualification of their products.

Broad Range of BQB-Qualified Products

Three products in Broadcom's Blutonium line have already achieved version 1.2 qualification. The BCM2004 became the first radio-only device to receive version 1.2 qualification. Working in conjunction with the Bluetooth baseband and protocol stack already integrated into QUALCOMM® CDMA chipsets, and compliant with QUALCOMM CDMA baseband interfaces, Broadcom's BCM2004 enables the most advanced Bluetooth radio functionality for the latest CDMA mobile phones.

The BCM2040 is the most complete wireless keyboard and mouse Bluetooth system-on-a-chip, incorporating both Bluetooth functionality and all circuitry required for keyboard and mouse applications. In addition, it was used in the first Bluetooth products to ship with Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH) technology built in, the Apple wireless mouse. AFH is now included in the version 1.2 specification and Broadcom's pre-release implementation of the technology has passed qualification testing.

The BCM2035 is a highly integrated single-chip Bluetooth host device for PCs, PDAs and GSM mobile phones. It delivers superior radio performance and requires no off-chip memory, instead integrating a ROM for on-board storage of Broadcom's BQB-certified firmware. While optimized for use in cost sensitive products such as cell phones, PCs and PDAs, the BCM2035 is also ideally suited for use in industrial and automotive applications, and operates in the industrial temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C. In addition to sensitivity performance, the radio also features programmable output power of up to +7dBm, which allows users to set the output power as needed to maximize performance within Bluetooth specifications. By using both maximum output power and extreme receiver sensitivity, two BCM2035 devices can connect at well over 100 meters in range.

Broadcom Blutonium Product Line

Broadcom's Blutonium line of Bluetooth products includes the BCM2040, currently the only available system-on-a-chip solution for wireless keyboards and mice; the BCM2004 radio-only device; and single-chip integrated baseband and radio solutions, such as the BCM2035 and BCM2033. The BCM2040, BCM2004, BCM2035 and BCM2033 are currently in high volume production with several major cellular phone and other end-product manufacturers.

All of the wireless chips in Broadcom's Bluetooth product line enjoy unique performance advantages such as improved throughput and range via Broadcom's SmartRadio™ technology. In addition to advanced signal processing techniques, the all-CMOS solutions are capable of self-calibrating based on actual temperature and other environmental conditions. The solutions automatically and repeatedly reconfigure in a manner transparent to the end-user for optimum performance. Competing radios are typically statically calibrated at the point of manufacture and are unable to adapt to changing environmental influences.
