IRVINE, Calif., Feb 15, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications semiconductors, today announced a new Bluetooth® chip that enables a significant increase in battery life and cost savings for Bluetooth wireless keyboards and mice. This new Blutonium® single-chip solution makes the wireless mouse and keyboard a cost-effective and practical option for an expanded range of PC users. Along with other recent Bluetooth developments from Broadcom, this new chip further accelerates the move towards clutter-free desktops and continues to heighten the PC end-user experience.
Announced today is the Broadcom® BCM2042 that integrates high-performance Bluetooth radio and baseband technologies, along with all of the electronic components required to manufacture a wireless keyboard or mouse, onto a single silicon chip. As a result, peripheral manufacturers will be able to produce wireless keyboard and mouse products that feature extended battery life, creative form factors and lower costs not previously available. These features will enable Broadcom customers to take advantage of growth areas attributable to consumer wireless peripheral products.
"The Bluetooth mouse and keyboard serve as essential components of the 'new desktop,' further justifying inclusion of this technology as a standard component in PCs and notebook computers while establishing Bluetooth as the default platform for short range wireless connectivity," said Scott Bibaud, Senior Director of Marketing for Broadcom's Bluetooth products. "We expect consumers will quickly appreciate the convenience of the cord-free PC experience, especially when the same technology that frees their keyboard and mouse can also be used for wireless stereo headsets, synchronization with cell phones and PDAs, printing and even IP telephony over their computers."
Because of its small size, low power consumption and high performance radio, the chip is also useful for other applications, such as in wireless game controllers and consumer electronics remote control devices.
Mouse & Keyboard on a Chip
In addition to integrated Bluetooth functionality, the BCM2042 keyboard and mouse chip includes a direct interface to a keyboard key scan matrix, optical mouse logic and an on-board boost regulator to provide the 3.3 volts of power required to operate a mouse LED. Manufacturers only need to add an external crystal and a few passive components to produce a complete product. In addition, the chip includes a built-in hardware interface to power-efficient sensors from Agilent® Technologies, supplier of the leading cordless optical mouse sensor on the market.
Designed to take advantage of the power savings made possible by the 0.13 micron CMOS manufacturing process, the BCM2042 provides an almost 50% reduction in current consumption over previous Broadcom solutions in active transmission mode. The new chip also includes Broadcom's unique ultra low power mode that allows the chip to consume only 10 micro amps of current, representing the lowest power consumption in the industry for this class of chips, while still performing immediate "wake up" when prompted. Keyboard and mouse products based on the BCM2042 chip and Bluetooth technology can enjoy 50% longer battery life than previously possible. As a result, a wireless mouse can typically operate for up to 12 months powered by just two AA batteries when coupled with next generation sensor technology.
The BCM2042 integrates a baseband processor and high performance 2.4 GHz radio into a single-chip configuration. Built-in firmware is compliant with the Bluetooth Human Interface Device (HID) profile, providing overall Bluetooth system performance that far exceeds industry requirements. Broadcom's WIDCOMM® BTW (Bluetooth for Windows®) software, the industry's leading Bluetooth software solution, is compatible with the Bluetooth version 2.0 SIG specification including important features such as adaptive frequency hopping to reduce interference and "fast connect" to extend battery life.
In addition, the WIDCOMM BTW software is the only product available that allows Bluetooth keyboard and mouse products to connect to and communicate with a PC without the need for an additional wired keyboard during the set-up process. As a result, the complete Broadcom Bluetooth silicon and software solution is the only proven solution currently available for OEMs that wish to ship wireless peripherals as standard offerings with their PCs.
Bluetooth Enabling the Wireless Desktop
Bluetooth technology in general offers substantial advantages over competing technologies as a platform for wireless connectivity at the desktop. While other technologies can enable only single applications, Bluetooth is being applied to a multitude of user interface devices for myriad applications. In addition, Bluetooth is unique in its ability to securely operate in densely-populated environments, such as in the enterprise and educational institutions, without self-interference or other related issues. The flexibility of Bluetooth means scores of wireless devices can be deployed while maintaining a homogenous radio environment that reduces complexity for IT managers, home users and equipment manufacturers. With the addition of Broadcom's InConcert™ technology, these devices can operate with minimal interference over existing Wi-Fi® networks.
With support for the latest Bluetooth A/V capabilities, high-quality wireless stereo headsets, advanced cell phone synchronization software and Enhanced Data Rates (EDR), Broadcom is actively developing the Bluetooth technologies needed to dramatically change the way people interact with their computers. Broadcom partners are deploying these Bluetooth multimedia technologies in real products that are available around the world today.
